Sewer Scope

During a sewer scope inspection, a flexible camera is inserted into the sewer line through an accessible cleanout. The camera travels through the pipe in real time, allowing the inspector to visually assess the interior condition of the line and identify any hidden issues that cannot be seen during a standard home inspection.

What Does It Check For?

A sewer scope inspection can reveal serious and costly problems, including:

  • Cracks or broken pipes
  • Root intrusion (very common in older properties)
  • Blockages or buildup (grease, debris, or foreign objects)
  • Pipe corrosion or deterioration
  • Bellies (sagging sections of pipe) that can trap waste
  • Improper repairs or connections

Why Is It Important?

Most home inspections do not include a full evaluation of the underground sewer line—and repairs to this system can cost thousands of dollars.

A sewer scope inspection helps:

  • Detect major issues before they become emergencies
  • Prevent unexpected sewage backups
  • Give buyers negotiating power during a purchase
  • Provide peace of mind about one of the home’s most critical systems

When Should You Get One?

A sewer scope inspection is highly recommended:

  • When buying an older home
  • If the property has large trees near the sewer line
  • If there are slow drains or recurring backups
  • Before the end of a home warranty period
  • As part of a preventative maintenance plan

What Happens After the Inspection?

After the inspection, you’ll typically receive:

  • A video recording of the sewer line
  • A detailed report with findings and recommendations
